The Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato vs. the Porsche 911 Dakar

The year 2022 has been an interesting one for auto enthusiasts; in the midst of governing bodies worldwide cracking down on fuel economy and emissions standards, and car manufacturers committing to transition most of their lineups (if not every model they make) to electric vehicles, we’ve seen some remarkably unique, exciting sports cars unveiled lately. At the LA Auto Show this year, Porsche unveiled their 911 Dakar, a tribute and homage to the great rally 911s of decades past. This was an expected move from them, as Porsche had teased the Dakar several times in the months prior to its’ unveiling. What is more surprising, then, is that Lamborghini appears to have followed suit, and unveiled their very own off-road supercar: the Huracan Sterrato. These two vehicles are really the only ones of their kind on the market, which begs the question: how do they compare to each other?

Huracan Sterrato

The first thing you’ll notice about the new Huracan Sterrato, as with most other new Lamborghinis, is its’ appearance. It is every bit as striking and aggressive as you’d want, and it takes the already-menacing-looking Huracan to the next level. Most notably, the Sterrato is immediately recognizable by the two additional auxiliary lights mounted on either side of the Raging Bull on the front hood. Wider fender flares and aggressive, straked running boards belie the ride height; the Sterrato rides 1.7” higher than the normal Huracan, but doesn’t look goofy or top-heavy. Additionally, Lamborghini engineers have also increased the track width in the front and rear by 1.2” and 1.3”, respectively. This should enable it to feel a bit more planted, despite the extra ground clearance.

From a sheer power standpoint, the Lamborghini has a significant power advantage over the Porsche, with its V10 motor churning out a whopping 602 horsepower, a number that is actually a good bit lower than the figures on the standard Huracan. Much like the Porsche, it also features modified bodywork and cladding to protect against rocks and trail debris, including the aforementioned wider wheel wells and running boards. A notable difference between the Sterrato and the road-focused Huracans is in the programming; while the average Huracan has a user-selectable Corsa mode for track use, the Sterrato replaces that with an actual Rally mode for off-road driving

Those interested in owning a Sterrato of their own should move fast; only 1,499 will be produced in 2023. Official pricing is forthcoming, but even at an anticipated price of over $300,000, these will sell like hotcakes, just like the other end-of-life special editions of Lamborghinis of yore.

911 Dakar

Much like the Sterrato, the Dakar rides high; in fact, the 911 Dakar boasts more than 3 inches of ground clearance over a standard 911. This appears to give it the advantage in terms of ground clearance, and probably suspension travel, too. The factory-custom engine is good for 473 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, which propel the 911 Dakar to 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds. Like the Huracan, the Dakar is all-wheel drive. They also both have their top speeds electronically limited due to those all-terrain tires and increased ride heights.

Cosmetically, the Dakar does feel like more of a complete rally package than the Sterrato. Porsche has put a substantial amount of effort into developing a complete line of purpose-built accessories for the Dakar, including a roof rack, gas carrier, recovery boards, and even a rooftop tent. Only 2,500 examples will ever be made of the Dakar, and prices will start at $222,000, meaning that while there will be more of these made than the Sterrato, these will always be rare and sought-after cars that will likely have future collectability (remember the 911 R)? German or Italian?

Which one of these off-road supercars reigns supreme? Well, the ultimate victor will likely come down to personal preference. Both cars offer tremendous pedigree and racing heritage, and have more than a few features in common: all-terrain tires, lifted suspensions, and all-wheel drive. Most will likely agree that the Dakar is a bit more “authentic,” and truly born of decades of rally experience. DMC’s journey into the Ferrari territory has just gotten bigger and the German tuners are taking a leap by adding the new Ferrari Purosangue to their line-up of tuning packages.

DMC is planning a sporty Carbon Fiber aero-kit and we don’t want you to miss the Concept Specs they just released.

GT3 inspired lines of the DMC carbon parts determine the strong styling of the new aerodynamic package for their Ferrari Purosangue. This includes the carbon lightweight aero front fenders with wheel arch louvers, and the particularly wide carbon side skirts. The front bumper’s front lip, the rear diffuser and the front hood design have not been modified, but they are replaced with ultra light-weight carbon fiber parts – an option that is not even available from OEM Ferrari yet.

The real eye-catcher however is the combo of 2 rear wings at the back: A  roof spoiler as well as a trunk lip duck wing complement the sportier look and are both TUV certified.

We wanted to give our clients the ability to add a bit more sport to the Purosangue – the car is very agile but it’s look lacks a bit of spice.

The DMC carbon parts replace the respective series components, making the car lighter. Take the OEM fenders off, replace them with DMC’s wider version. Same goes for the side panels and front lip. In addition, the carbon rear spoiler profile with DMC lettering integrated in the carbon fiber structure has a new striking shape and the wings considerably expand the Purosangue’s lines – this creates an unmistakable racing look. At the same time, the aerodynamic balance of the production vehicle is retained.

The scope of parts of the DMC carbon kit can be freely configured and enables Purosangue owners to match the vehicle, optionally in matt or high gloss visible carbon fiber.

If the current established order of the SUV stratosphere were to remain unchanged, then you could liken the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Lambo Urus relationship to a royal rumble who still separate their assets (fight purses) because they are not tied to a ring showdown (just yet).

The Italian thoroughbred takes the automotive kingdom’s aggressive, super-SUV high-performance territory, while the British blueblood wants nothing but the ritzy, comfy full-size suicide-door domains. But enough symbolism because we should just treat them for what they are: the crown jewels of the four-wheeled industry.

And there is no need to take our word for granted. Instead, there is a great fairytale-like case in point to be told from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan perspective. The story starts with Miami, Florida-based ANRKY Wheels, a company that has a simple motto: “disrupting the established order.” But they certainly went above and beyond for this one, with more than a little help from Wheels Boutique.

The latter neighbor, self-described as the “largest dealer for the world’s top brands,” has prepared a Rolls-Royce Cullinan that will drop virtual social media jaws a little bit later than expected. This is because people first must pause, gasp for air, and let the reality of this build project sink in. Then, they can also think of the upcoming aftermarket wars that will kick off into high-riding gear once the V12-powered, coach door-equipped Ferrari Purosangue also starts its first posh deliveries.

As for details, there are much fewer than we would like to have. For example, although the Spirit of Ecstasy is just as black as those humongous 24-inch aftermarket ANRKY wheels (but let us get back to them in a moment or two), and there are other matching details, such as the gloss black radiator grille, there is no way of being sure if this stately SUV is a Black Badge or not, as the owner chose to keep the chromed RR emblems in place.

Now, let us discuss the ‘smaller’ elephant in the china shop. That would be the 24-inch, gloss black RF-282 ANRKY Wheels, which almost look puny when compared to the full-size demeanor of this Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV, which was apparently sourced from Chicago Motor Cars before undergoing the refitment and modification process over at Wheels Boutique.

Then, it is also time to address the ‘bigger’ mammoth in the china shop. In turn, that would be the Novitec Group’s take on the lowered widebody attire arriving courtesy of its Spofec subsidiary in Overdose form. Boy, if this aggressive makeover that almost cuts into the super-SUV Lambo Urus territory fails to catch someone’s attention, I would say they are completely immune to the Cullinan’s rowdy yet elegant charm. Or hate the idea of ultra-luxury SUVs so much they will be immovable. Either way works for me, frankly.

Anyway, we have talked about China and shops a lot, but truth be told we should be referencing Colombia instead. This is because the South American country has been the top provider of finest quality dark green emeralds for years. Alas, they probably had no influence over the body color of this Rolls-Royce and instead, the Cullinan was subtly dressed in Dark Emerald attire because it is a truly rare (sparkling) commission – and these unique ideas are increasingly hard to find these days.

Overall, this custom Rolls-Royce Cullinan does not disappoint, as it features just the right amount of subtlety thanks to the rich, deep color choice as well as a few outrageous ‘details’ (the black, contrasting wheels and widebody aero treatment) to attract everyone’s attention. Then, in the end, you would also be surprised by how simple the interior presents itself. Everywhere, there is a classic white and black atmosphere acting as a true statement of taste and refinement!

The 2023 Benz GLE 450 is a standard SUV 4WD with a wheel drive drivetrain.
