Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to offer a fresh take on its popular GLC SUV lineup, introducing the AMG-tuned GLC43 and the high-performance GLC63 S E Performance, both in sleek coupe form. These sporty new models are set to captivate enthusiasts with their impressive powertrains and eye-catching designs.
While the exterior may flaunt a more coupe-like profile, underneath, these new models retain the potent running gear found in their standard AMG GLC SUV counterparts. Let’s take a closer look at what sets these two siblings apart.
Starting with the powerhouse, the GLC63 S E Performance stands out as the star of the show. It packs a punch with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing a formidable 469 horsepower. But that’s not all; an additional 201 horsepower is contributed by its electric motor, resulting in a jaw-dropping combined output of 671 peak horsepower and an astonishing 752 pound-feet of torque. However, it’s important to note that this peak power is only accessible for a brief 10-second burst, making it a true powerhouse for quick sprints.
On the other hand, the GLC43 offers a hybrid setup, albeit a milder one. Under the hood, you’ll find the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine, tuned to deliver 416 horsepower. It’s complemented by a small electric motor that provides an additional 13 horsepower when needed. Both models feature Mercedes-Benz’s AMG Speedshift nine-speed transmission and benefit from rear-axle steering along with the AMG Ride Control suspension as standard, ensuring a thrilling and controlled driving experience.
Surprisingly, the transformation from SUV to coupe hasn’t altered the performance figures for these models. The GLC43 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 4.7 seconds, with its top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. In contrast, the GLC63 S E Performance is a true sprinter, hitting 60 mph in a mere 3.4 seconds, with its speed limiter only engaging at a lofty 171 mph.
In terms of hardware and features, both models remain largely consistent with their SUV counterparts. They share the same suspension options, performance brakes, and an interior layout featuring the renowned MBUX system. However, where they diverge significantly is in interior space. The GLC63 S E Performance offers 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, expanding to a generous 47.1 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. Meanwhile, the GLC43 provides slightly more room, with 19.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seats and an expansive 52.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. While the coupe silhouette may sacrifice a bit of practicality, it undoubtedly enhances the vehicles’ aesthetics.
As for pricing and availability, Mercedes-Benz has yet to release official figures, but we do know that the GLC43 is slated as a 2024 model, while the GLC63 S E Performance will make its debut as a 2025 model. So, if you’re in the market for a stylish, high-performance coupe-SUV, these new Mercedes-AMG GLC models are worth keeping an eye on as they bring a new level of excitement to the luxury SUV segment.
